Moorestown 10 - Rumson Fair Haven 7 (Reg Season)
Details of Game #1: Mar 29, 2017
In a battle of top 5 NJ teams, Moorestown defeated Rumson 10-7 at the Jersey Shore behind Quinn Nicolai's seven goals and a stout defense.
The Quakers made the 90 minute trek to Monmouth County and played one of the top teams in NJ and came away with a workmanlike victory over the Bulldogs.
Moorestown jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but a flurry of back and forth activity and turnovers prevented the Quakers from extending their lead. In all Moorestown had 11 turnovers, however, many of them were forced as the officials rarely called any fouls until the second half.
Draw control was an even 9-9 with the Quakers having the advantage in the first half, allowing them to take the early lead.
The Moorestown defense played very well with many athletic plays and pass deflections that resulted in positive turnovers. Nikki Dadino played her usual solid all around defensive game and Brittney Wright and Julia Dalmass locked down their attackers with each possession. Delaney Lawler had several nice deflections and ground balls while Kayla Frank gave a monster effort with four ground balls and four draw controls. Cailin Field had three draws and ground balls while Robin Panzarella got two timely legal checks that changed momentum and field position. Nicolai was the playmaker and difference as she filled the stat sheet with not just her scoring but also two assists, two interceptions and ground balls.
The Quakers were "held" to 23 shots. Much of that may have been a direct result of turnovers. However, the Quakers went into a well run stall that lasted for close to five minutes which may have taken away several more shots.
Last year's Rumson team lost to Moorestown in the first game of the season and then rattled off 24 consecutive victories. It would not be a surprise to see them chart the same course in 2017 and ultimately push for a TOC spot.
