Moorestown 8 - Summit 9 (State Championship)
Details of Game #23: Jun 03, 2017
Two of the top teams in NJ and top 15 in the country squared off for the NJ Group 3 Championship at Kean University with Summit defeating Moorestown 9-8.
Moorestown's road to the TOC was derailed by the Summit Hilltoppers in a game that was as intense a 50 minutes as one will ever see in girls lacrosse. Both teams battled each possession and contested every shot, pass, dodge and draw. If these two teams played 10 times it may be a 5-5 split. Both teams were battle tested due to their tough schedules and both have long standing winning traditions. There is good reason both were so highly ranked in all the national polls.
Summit jumped out to a 4-1 lead but Moorestown stormed back to make the halftime score 5-5. The momentum had shifted and all looked right after the Quakers went up 7-5 and got possession. However, seconds later, after Moorestown turned the ball over, Summit went on a three goal run to take the lead 8-7. Moorestown would later tie the game on a Kayla Frank free position but Summit's Helen Johnson would score the game winner with under two minutes. Moorestown got another chance to tie due to it's relentless defense but the final shot was turned away in the waining seconds. The game was so close that draw control was nine apiece. Moorestown played with great effort and intensity but as has been the case over the last several years, a few too many turnovers and poor shot selection seemed to be driving force in falling just short of it's goal of winning it's 22nd State Title.
The seniors made this season special and one that each team member will cherish forever. This senior class, all 16, kept the pride in the program, showed great maturity and love for one another. For so many reasons on and off the lacrosse field, this group left a lasting imprint on the legacy of MGLAX and have now passed the torch on to the future classes.
The ultimate goal may not have been achieved but 20-3 against this schedule has once again brought Moorestown Girls Lacrosse national respectability and solidified its place as one of the best programs in the country.
